What are Worms and 4 Benefits of Deworming
Worms are parasites that live in several places in the human body. We should deworm at least once every 2 or 3 months.
Some types of worms are; hook, pin, round, and tapeworms.
Everyone has heard about intestinal worms, and also about the most common medicines used to deworm which are; mebendazole and albendazole. As a matter of fact, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) has an estimate which shows that globally, at about 1.5bn people have roundworms, which makes it the third most common human infection that exists in the world.
People get infected by worms if they eat undercooked meat or dairy products, raw salads and eggs, or if they get in contact with infected animals such as cats.
According to Unicef, worm infestations may impact on a child’s ability to learn and that growth rate and weight gain among children who regularly deworm is higher compared to those who don’t.
Worm infestations can present with diarrhoea, loss of appetite, and abdominal cramps.
It is recommended that deworming with albendazole, especially among children should be done every six months. Albendazole tablets come in 400miligramme sizes and cost between Shs2,000 and Shs8,000.
For pin worm, hygiene is the more recommended option to deal with the problem.
Albendazole is not recommended to use in deworming during pregnancy or breastfeeding mothers. Mebendazole on the other hand, is administered as a 100miligramme tablet, and costs Shs10,000. The dosage, however, depends on the type of worm being treated.
The second course of treatment for both of these drugs should be given only to patients who are still infected three or four weeks after the first course of medication. The efficacy of mebendazole depends on the duration of physical contact between the drug and parasite. When gastrointestinal transit time is accelerated, for instance among people with diarrhoea, it is recommended that the dose is repeated at more frequent intervals every day.
Benefits of deworming/Why You Should Deworm regularly
Deworming, also referred to as drenching or worming, is the medical practice of giving anthelmintic drugs to animals to assist them to get rid of various intestinal parasites like tapeworms and roundworms. This process has countless health benefits for both the animal and other people as well. Read on to discover benefits of deworming
- Prevents health issues
Because worms can cause several health issues and might even be easily transmitted to humans, deworming animals is very important. For instance, if cows were not dewormed, the parasites present in the cows will be transferred onto people who consume beef meat. To prevent this from occurring, cows that are meant for consumption are regularly dewormed. So Humans should deworm at least once in two or three months, to avoid any health issue.
- Eases the mind
Most pets like dogs and cats do not usually exhibit any outward indications of having internal parasites. It is vital to ask your veterinarian to test your pet’s stool regularly. Actually, deworming offers many pet owners the peace that they know their beloved pet is not carrying any parasites that may either kill them or pass on to their children.
- Eliminates gastrointestinal parasites
GI parasites or gastrointestinal parasites are parasites found in the small and large intestines, colon and the stomach. These parasites are found in most domestic species and can be very harmful without treatment. Actually, they cause anaemia, diarrhoea, intestinal blockage and weight loss. Deworming involves the introduction of anthelmintic drugs to the affected animals, which then eliminates the gastrointestinal parasites.
- Benefits children
Deworming practices used in developing nations to eliminate intestinal worms are highly beneficial to children. Through removing the worms, the children are more likely to continue attending school regularly and become highly productive as they grow up.
Deworming can cause several nasty side effects like vomiting and diarrhea based on the infection’s severity. This is more visible in situations where there are large numbers of parasites, which cause an impaction of the intestines.
Generally speaking, for a healthy body system, we should make it a habit to deorm regularly.
