For starters, Boxing Day has nothing at all to do with boxing. With that being said, many people do not fully realize the phrase “Boxing Day”. To a handful of it means a day after Christmas while to others it basically means 26th December of the year. Boxing Day is the day after Christmas (December 26th) and is an additional Holiday or vacation after Christmas. But what exactly is the Origin of Boxing Day?
A number of even say its a day was and I quote “If one is killed while fighting, the law should not be utilized against the person”. Such was actually the concept made use of in Hollywood movie “The Purge” but was carefully twisted in a separate way/
Honestly, Nigerians have forever celebrated what they don’t discern or understand and have it’s not necessary to partake in its celebration. It may get your interest to grasp that boxing day has a trace of Master & Servant ( Slavery ) embedded in it. Below is the true meaning of boxing day, its origin and the untold story concerning this . . . .
What is Boxing Day?
Arguments and disagreements come thick and fast as to why, and I hope, like me, you find the information and facts below insightful. But first of all, I have to say, there is absolutely nothing to do with the sport of boxing. The most straight-forward answer might possibly be that people are just a little enthusiastic here in the UK and Ireland in eager for a further extended vacation.
It is not sufficient for people to have just Christmas Day celebrations, we now have included this one more event called Boxing Day. But the answer is not really that uncomplicated. Boxing Day is a national Bank Holiday, a day to dedicate to friends and relations so you can eat up all the leftovers of Christmas Day. The foundation of the day, however, is steeped in history and tradition.
Why is it Called Boxing Day?
Arguments abound on the roots of the term Boxing Day. All the responses below are suitable, so presumably, it is one, or even all of them.
A ‘Christmas Box’ in Britain is a name for a Christmas present. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants as well as the day when they were given a ‘Christmas Box’ from the master. The servants would most likely also go home on Boxing Day to give ‘Christmas Boxes’ to their families.
Package to amass money for the poor traditionally and placed in Churches on Christmas day and unwrapped the next day – Boxing Day. Great sailing ships when setting sail would have a sealed box containing funds on board for good luck. Were the voyage successful, the package was presented with to a priest, unwrapped at Christmas and the items then passed on to the poor.
When is Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is the 26th December and is a national holiday in the UK and Ireland.
Activities on Boxing Day
Boxing Day is a time to stay with family and friends or friends, usually those not seen on Yuletide Day itself. In recent times, the day has become likened with lots of sports. Horse racing is predominantly popular with meets all over the country. A lot of top football clubs also play on Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is also a time when the British show their eccentricity by getting involved in several preposterous activities. These comprise of bizarre traditions, for instance, swimming the icy cold English Channel, fun runs, and charity events.
However, the modification of government in the UK in 2015 has once again hoisted the argument of reinstating foxhunting.
Boxing Day in Ireland
In Ireland, Boxing Day is also known as “St. Stephen’s Day” named after the Saint stoned to death for believing in Jesus. In Ireland on Boxing, there was once a barbaric act carried out by the so-called “Wren Boys .” These boys would dress up and go out, and stone wren birds to death then carry their catch around the town knocking on doors and asking for money, the stoning representing what had happened to St Stephen. This terrible tradition has now stopped, thank goodness, but the Wrens Boys still dress up but instead parade around town and collect money for charity.
Origin of Boxing Day
You’ve presumably already heard a whole variety of different tales about why December 26 is called Boxing Day – however, this is actually where the designation truly comes from. It’s not simply because people get rid of all of their boxes from Christmas Day or even because unnecessary gifts are boxed up – its origins are from much earlier.
Recently it is often very much associated with shopping sales, football matches, horse racing and even fox hunting, however, the name is nothing to do with any of those. The Oxford English Dictionary says that the initial mention of Boxing Day in Britain was in the 1830s.
They define it as “the first week-day after Christmas-day, observed as a holiday trip on which post-men, errand-boys, and servants of different types expect to collect a Christmas-box”. The giving of containers refers to the practice of receiving for the poor with boxes, which were unwrapped the day after Christmas, which is also St Stephen’s Day despite the fact that what these boxes were actually for is debated.
When this practice first started is also contested as a number of saying it can be traced dating back to the Victorian era, however, others say it goes back much farther. There are some claims it dates back to the Middle Ages and even the Roman Empire, once Christianity had arrived on the scene.
Though the timing of its origins may be disputed, it was the Victorians who fleshed out the significance of Boxing Day as in 1871 it became a bank holiday. It was around this time, as a result of the escalating tradition, that wealthy people gave their servants time off work to pay a visit to their families. They were given a box to take home, bearing gifts, bonuses and sometimes leftover food item.
A different custom was for tradespeople to be given ‘Christmas boxes’ of presents or money on the first weekday after Christmas as appreciation for good service all year around. Samuel Pepys mentions this practice in a diary entry from December 19th, 1663: “Thence by coach to my shoemaker’s and remunerated all there, and gave something to the boys’ box against Christmas .”
It is primarily a British tradition, although it is also practised in nations like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is not observed in the US. – Question is;
Why do Nigerians observe Boxing Day Celebration? It’s probably because we like to follow western traditions, or simply because we deserve a holiday after all the work in the year. Whatever the reason be, we just have to enjoy the extra vacation called Boxing Day!
The year 2017 was a good year for the Nigerian Entertainment Industry as a lot of great things happened! Events, Music wise, awards and not to forget the beefs and makeups that come with success and failure! Both for the rookie and the PRO’s a lot was achieved, and there are more prospects for 2018 to be better!
But amidst the great sounds we heard, some artiste stand out from the rest. This does not mean other artistes did not do marvellously well, but even among gods, there is still God.
NG Papers release Top 10 Artiste for 2017. The list which is in no particular order lists some artistes who have had a remarkable career run in 2017. Here are NG Papers Top 10 Artiste in the year 2017.
Mister Incredible came back to the game on a mission to pass a message and right some wrongs. M.I who is said to have placed Rap on a high stand in Nigerian Music Industry dropped a song “YOU RAPPERS” and it sparked a lot of controversies! All M.I wanted to do was to get rappers back on track, as some of his lyrics depicted when he said “Rappers and now switching lanes in order to stay relevant”. A lot of rappers jumped on the “YOU RAPPERS” instrumental in a bid to reply M.I. Some were dope, while so many others were disrespectful, just like Osagz did to M.I. Mister Incredible just proved that he can come and shine a light on the rap game whenever he wants, and solidified his stand as the King of Rap in Nigeria and probably Africa as a whole.
The girl with the Golden voice and this is not even about Adekunle. Started from the bottom and now she’s here, Simi had a superb career run in 2017. Simi is a case of “Talent cannot hide” as her music penetrates the heart of her real fans. Her voice, lyrics and charm is another reason why you just can’t help but love her!
Simi released her ”Simisola” album in 2017 and it was a blend of sweet and soulful music all through! Even though she always gets attacked on social media for her “lack of fashion style” but that can never dent her talent because her music speaks more volume than her critics. We can only expect more from Simi in 2018.
Former G-Worldwide front man Kiss Daniel has been on fire since “Woju” came to limelight and he does not look like he’s about to back down. The only problem may be with his former label who still claims to own him and his stage name, but if he can find a way out of this, he’s definitely going to continue igniting his fans with good music with his new label Flyboy Inc.
Blending his music with a dope fashion sense, and sometimes Comedy, Kiss Daniel is the fans favourite. The YEBA crooner has proven that he got music running in his vein by dropping hit track after hit track. 2017 was good, and if he can overcome his recent troubles then 2018 should be better!
Niniola is a case of determination, good music and consistency. Niniola is no rookie as she has been in the industry for some time, even though she didn’t get the type of “recognition” she deserves. Creating good music and pushing her craft with determination, let’s you know she’s not one to push aside! “Maradona” was a mad hit in 2017 and solidified her music in the heart of many. Getting to this stage only means that she won’t stop, even after she takes the crown from whoever claims to be the Queen of the music industry in Nigeria. Rooting for her!
With one of the most cited quotes of 2017 “If you no get money…hide your face!” and coming with an unstoppable wave, Small Doctor performed surgery with fate, and the outcome solidified his music in almost every nook and corner of the country! Imagine people in Enugu dancing and singing the lyrics of Small Doctor’s songs even when they don’t know the meaning, that how deep he penetrated the grassroots and beyond.
An inspiration to the Ghetto Child, and a reassurance that you can start from grass and get graced, Small Doctor played a Penalty in the heart of Nigerians and won Gold!
Even after his mazturbation video went viral, he kept on going to major event like nothing happened, and the love people has for him finally overshadowed everything! The sky can only be his starting point if he stays focused, consistent and determined!
After a successful 2016, Olamide continued to stay relevant in 2017 releasing hit tracks back to back! From collaborations to summer body and then infesting the streets with the mad jam “WO” which almost made a lot of people go mad, Olamide Baddo did not go below the expectations of is fans. And when we thought he was done, he released an album “Lagos Na Wa” and his OLIC show at Teslim Balogun Stadium sealed an amazing career run in 2017 for Baddo Sneh.
Wizkid and Davido:
Considering the so-called beef surrounding Wizkid and Davido in recent times, we just have to put them both together as one on this list for the culture! They are both making Nigeria and Africa as a whole proud; with great songs, awards and collaborations. There have been speculations that there is an unhealthy rivalry between Wizkid and Davido, even before the “fight” at One Africa Music Fest, but we have seen videos in recent times of Wizkid and Davido together, even saying “F*ck the blogs” for sparking up controversy where there is none.
They both gave us songs to groove to, considering the tracks in Wizkids “SOFTS” EP, and then becoming the first African to sell out Royal Albert Hall in London, and capping it with MANYA. Davido also gave us massive hits like “IF” and then dropping a fire called “FIA” just before the end of 2017, giving us a song to groove to in this season of celebration. It’s just amazing that they are both Nigerians and Africans doing us proud.
Come 2018 all we want is for them to either take their beef as serious as 2PAC and Notorious B.I.G, or be matured enough to unite like brothers and create a jam together for the fans.
Bragging rights are in place for Runtown in 2017 after having the most played song on Lagos radio! Released in November 2016, Mad Over You by Runtown was a massive hit in 2017 with overwhelming radio requests! Runtown in his style of music which has a Ghanaian flavour could perhaps say his music also influenced many Nigerian artistes to jump on Ghanaian sound, just like Mr Eazi said he introduced Banku Sound t Nigerian artistes from Ghana.
After a remarkable 2017 with songs like Mad Over You and For Life topping charts all over the continent, signing endorsement deals and grabbing awards, we expect Runtown to Run this Town by giving us more good music in 2018!
FALZ The Bahd Guy:
Folarin Falana aka Falz the Bahd Guy is a lot of things like; a Lawyer, Comedian, Actor, and a rapper! His unique style which comes with natural humour, is among the top reasons why he is an interesting act to follow. Falz rocked 2017 with songs like “Weh Don Sir” which sparked up a trend pose on social media, and “Something Light” featuring YCEE (Ycee nailed his verse by the way) which buzzed the airwaves. And when we thought he was done with 2017, Falz pulled a Beyonce’ on us by releasing a surprise Album “27” on his 27th birthday. Bahd guy!
Mavin Records First Lady, who her fans like to portray as African Beyonce’ had a smooth run in 2017. The 37-year-old mother who is ever vibrant on stage, continues to show that she’s at the top of her game! With songs like “ALL OVER” and MALO Ft. Wizkid and Spellz, and an Extended Play which topped iTunes and Apple charts, you just have to give it up for Tiwa.
We have 10 artistes now but there are many other artistes who did remarkably well in 2017. personally felt Mayorkun and wish there was a way to put him on this list…guess I just did that LOL. Tekno was good too, but if there’s a way to send a pigeon to tell him to upgrade his lyrics I would do that! So many great acts in 2017, and many to break out in 2018. Glad to see the Nigerian Entertainment industry booming.
Here it is, NG Papers Top 10 Artist 2017. If you feel there are others who are not on the list, feel free to throw in the names in the comment box.
Everyone is talking about Bitcoins now, especially with the surge it’s experiencing. Bitcoin Price is seriously multiplying, and as of today the current bitcoin value on 12th December 2017 the price of one Bitcoin is $19,346. I mean…just two days ago the price of one bitcoin was $15,000 and last month it was around $12,000.
A friend of mine who is into cryptocurrency trading said the price of Bitcoin will keep skyrocketing. He said If I buy $100 worth of Bitcoin now, in 2-5years I will be a millionaire. I’m definitely buying some after this!
Now…What is Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency…like a digital currency (an online money that is not cash) which is held electronically and used to make payments worldwide. Bitcoin is the first decentralized digital currency, that is to say, there is no central bank or single administrator. Bitcoin is the highest cryptocurrency and is used for payment in many online stores, hotels etc. and after it’s introduction by Satoshi Nakamoto on 3 January 2009, people are now recognizing it more and more every day!
How to Earn Bitcoins.
2. Earn Bitcoins by Completing tasks on websites. You can earn bitcoins by completing tasks on websites like some bitcoin faucets like freebitco.in BUT honestly speaking I see this as time wasting. Why should I spend 6 hours a day completing tasks only to get peanuts? I mean especially when data is expensive over here! But if you have time, and are where data is cheap, you can go ahead! Having referrals on these sites is more productive than actually doing the job on the bitcoin faucets.
3. Earn Bitcoins From Mining. You can earn bitcoins by mining it. Bitcoin mining is the process by which transactions are verified and added to the public ledger, known as the blockchain, and also the means through which new bitcoin are released. … The mining process involves compiling recent transactions into blocks and trying to solve a computationally difficult puzzle Bitcoin mining can be expensive and time-consuming, but you can hook up with sites like Bitminter.com and they will help mine bitcoins for you.
4. Earn Bitcoins through Trading by Buying and Selling. This is the most popular way of earning bitcoins. It’s either you buy lower and sell higher, or you buy bitcoins and wait for the price to go high then you sell. As simple as ABC.
5. Earn Bitcoins through Forex Trading. If you are good in forex trading, you can multiply your bitcoins through Bitcoin Trading. The era of trading with just US Dollars is over, as you can now trade forex in your local currency as well as trade forex with Bitcoins. Super cool! So just get to know how to speculate on the worlds largest market and trade with Bitcoins!
Other ways of earning bitcoins are through getting tipped in bitcoin, gambling which I won’t advise just like MMM and co. I have used, lost and traded Bitcoins in the past, but it’s getting more serious now and I’m going back t store some for future purpose! Bitcoin is the future of Money..perhaps the universal money of the future! If you are drawn to any of the above ways to earn bitcoins, study and learn more about it, and start earning some bitcoins today!
From one LAI to another, the government keeps acting like we are robots that they can control anyhow. The National Economic Council NEC, approved $1B from Excess Crude Account to fight Boko Haram Terrorists in the North East, and these actions keep making one wonder if Nigeria is now an Animal Farm that is for a selected few. It’s saddening to see these Boko Haram Terrorist kill people, also disheartening is that the FG had initially said they had technically defeated Boko Haram, but now require as much as $1B One Billion Dollars to fight Boko Haram insurgents. One day they come and say one thing, the next day they say another.
Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki came out to say that the 36 Governors of the Nigerian State approved the $1B, but the Governor of Ekiti State Ayo Fayose denied the allegation, saying he is not among those who approved using over half of Nigeria’s savings to fight an already defeated Boko Haram. Even the former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode expressed disgust at the action by FG and APC.
For posterity sake, I wish to place it on record that I was not among the governors, who approved the withdrawal of $1bn, almost half of our savings in the Excess Crude Account, which belongs to the three tiers of govt to fight an already defeated Boko Haram.
— Peter Ayodele Fayose (@GovAyoFayose) December 15, 2017
This is the same Government that promised to wipe out Boko Haram in 6 months, but it appears they are planning to wipe out the reserve of the nation, and use it to fund their projects. How is it that now that 2019 Elections is close they are using such an amount? To show you how confused they are, just within 2 weeks of raising the Nigerian Flag and declaring Boko Haram Defeated, they are now using $1B to fight Boko Haram.
Nigeria is just recovering from Recession and the economy still badly depleted, but Your MCM got $1B to Fight Boko Haram Terrorists, which they had Defeated Technically. It’s now obvious that there can also be legal corruption where you loot through legal means. We continue to observe.
