The year 2017 was a good year for the Nigerian Entertainment Industry as a lot of great things happened! Events, Music wise, awards and not to forget the beefs and makeups that come with success and failure! Both for the rookie and the PRO’s a lot was achieved, and there are more prospects for 2018 to be better!
But amidst the great sounds we heard, some artiste stand out from the rest. This does not mean other artistes did not do marvellously well, but even among gods, there is still God.
NG Papers release Top 10 Artiste for 2017. The list which is in no particular order lists some artistes who have had a remarkable career run in 2017. Here are NG Papers Top 10 Artiste in the year 2017.
Mister Incredible came back to the game on a mission to pass a message and right some wrongs. M.I who is said to have placed Rap on a high stand in Nigerian Music Industry dropped a song “YOU RAPPERS” and it sparked a lot of controversies! All M.I wanted to do was to get rappers back on track, as some of his lyrics depicted when he said “Rappers and now switching lanes in order to stay relevant”. A lot of rappers jumped on the “YOU RAPPERS” instrumental in a bid to reply M.I. Some were dope, while so many others were disrespectful, just like Osagz did to M.I. Mister Incredible just proved that he can come and shine a light on the rap game whenever he wants, and solidified his stand as the King of Rap in Nigeria and probably Africa as a whole.
The girl with the Golden voice and this is not even about Adekunle. Started from the bottom and now she’s here, Simi had a superb career run in 2017. Simi is a case of “Talent cannot hide” as her music penetrates the heart of her real fans. Her voice, lyrics and charm is another reason why you just can’t help but love her!
Simi released her ”Simisola” album in 2017 and it was a blend of sweet and soulful music all through! Even though she always gets attacked on social media for her “lack of fashion style” but that can never dent her talent because her music speaks more volume than her critics. We can only expect more from Simi in 2018.
Former G-Worldwide front man Kiss Daniel has been on fire since “Woju” came to limelight and he does not look like he’s about to back down. The only problem may be with his former label who still claims to own him and his stage name, but if he can find a way out of this, he’s definitely going to continue igniting his fans with good music with his new label Flyboy Inc.
Blending his music with a dope fashion sense, and sometimes Comedy, Kiss Daniel is the fans favourite. The YEBA crooner has proven that he got music running in his vein by dropping hit track after hit track. 2017 was good, and if he can overcome his recent troubles then 2018 should be better!
Niniola is a case of determination, good music and consistency. Niniola is no rookie as she has been in the industry for some time, even though she didn’t get the type of “recognition” she deserves. Creating good music and pushing her craft with determination, let’s you know she’s not one to push aside! “Maradona” was a mad hit in 2017 and solidified her music in the heart of many. Getting to this stage only means that she won’t stop, even after she takes the crown from whoever claims to be the Queen of the music industry in Nigeria. Rooting for her!
With one of the most cited quotes of 2017 “If you no get money…hide your face!” and coming with an unstoppable wave, Small Doctor performed surgery with fate, and the outcome solidified his music in almost every nook and corner of the country! Imagine people in Enugu dancing and singing the lyrics of Small Doctor’s songs even when they don’t know the meaning, that how deep he penetrated the grassroots and beyond.
An inspiration to the Ghetto Child, and a reassurance that you can start from grass and get graced, Small Doctor played a Penalty in the heart of Nigerians and won Gold!
Even after his mazturbation video went viral, he kept on going to major event like nothing happened, and the love people has for him finally overshadowed everything! The sky can only be his starting point if he stays focused, consistent and determined!
After a successful 2016, Olamide continued to stay relevant in 2017 releasing hit tracks back to back! From collaborations to summer body and then infesting the streets with the mad jam “WO” which almost made a lot of people go mad, Olamide Baddo did not go below the expectations of is fans. And when we thought he was done, he released an album “Lagos Na Wa” and his OLIC show at Teslim Balogun Stadium sealed an amazing career run in 2017 for Baddo Sneh.
Wizkid and Davido:
Considering the so-called beef surrounding Wizkid and Davido in recent times, we just have to put them both together as one on this list for the culture! They are both making Nigeria and Africa as a whole proud; with great songs, awards and collaborations. There have been speculations that there is an unhealthy rivalry between Wizkid and Davido, even before the “fight” at One Africa Music Fest, but we have seen videos in recent times of Wizkid and Davido together, even saying “F*ck the blogs” for sparking up controversy where there is none.
They both gave us songs to groove to, considering the tracks in Wizkids “SOFTS” EP, and then becoming the first African to sell out Royal Albert Hall in London, and capping it with MANYA. Davido also gave us massive hits like “IF” and then dropping a fire called “FIA” just before the end of 2017, giving us a song to groove to in this season of celebration. It’s just amazing that they are both Nigerians and Africans doing us proud.
Come 2018 all we want is for them to either take their beef as serious as 2PAC and Notorious B.I.G, or be matured enough to unite like brothers and create a jam together for the fans.
Bragging rights are in place for Runtown in 2017 after having the most played song on Lagos radio! Released in November 2016, Mad Over You by Runtown was a massive hit in 2017 with overwhelming radio requests! Runtown in his style of music which has a Ghanaian flavour could perhaps say his music also influenced many Nigerian artistes to jump on Ghanaian sound, just like Mr Eazi said he introduced Banku Sound t Nigerian artistes from Ghana.
After a remarkable 2017 with songs like Mad Over You and For Life topping charts all over the continent, signing endorsement deals and grabbing awards, we expect Runtown to Run this Town by giving us more good music in 2018!
FALZ The Bahd Guy:
Folarin Falana aka Falz the Bahd Guy is a lot of things like; a Lawyer, Comedian, Actor, and a rapper! His unique style which comes with natural humour, is among the top reasons why he is an interesting act to follow. Falz rocked 2017 with songs like “Weh Don Sir” which sparked up a trend pose on social media, and “Something Light” featuring YCEE (Ycee nailed his verse by the way) which buzzed the airwaves. And when we thought he was done with 2017, Falz pulled a Beyonce’ on us by releasing a surprise Album “27” on his 27th birthday. Bahd guy!
Mavin Records First Lady, who her fans like to portray as African Beyonce’ had a smooth run in 2017. The 37-year-old mother who is ever vibrant on stage, continues to show that she’s at the top of her game! With songs like “ALL OVER” and MALO Ft. Wizkid and Spellz, and an Extended Play which topped iTunes and Apple charts, you just have to give it up for Tiwa.
We have 10 artistes now but there are many other artistes who did remarkably well in 2017. personally felt Mayorkun and wish there was a way to put him on this list…guess I just did that LOL. Tekno was good too, but if there’s a way to send a pigeon to tell him to upgrade his lyrics I would do that! So many great acts in 2017, and many to break out in 2018. Glad to see the Nigerian Entertainment industry booming.
